My Name Is Fashion

By Jonathan Smith on March 5th, 2009

The American Workman: a style born out of necessity. As the look transgresses into the fashion world some of this rough necessity is lost a replaced with sanitised styling but I say if you’re going to do a look do it all out, why be satisfied with anything less than 100%? Dress like an American Workman, warts and all and with this most utilitarian of looks you’ll have plenty of pocket space for all your tools (Blackberry and Oyster card) plus have you ever worn an oversized flannel shirt? Shit is coooommmmfffffffeeeeeeee.

So as the American Workman promises to hit fever pitch this season who do you want to look to as your style idol? Earl Hickey. Jason Lee’s character from My Name Is Earl has his shit together; check shirt and T-shirt, beat up worn jeans and work boots all working for him big time. As for accessories American light beer (can or bottle) occasional cigarette (soft pack of Lucky Strikes) and hot, blond, trailer loving ex-wife with 2 illegitimate kids- score. If you want to go all out, and I suggest you do, then you need to trade your car in for a beat up pick-up truck and some Creedence on tape, you never know it could be life affirming.

Ryan O’Neal: Style icon?

By Colin Chapman on January 21st, 2009

Continuing our (irregular) series of potential style icons, let’s consider Ryan O’Neal. Most likely to appear in the headlines now due to problems with his personal life, there was a time when Mr O’Neal had the world at his feet. Of course it helps being stunningly handsome, as he was, but there is something about his deadpan charm and (often) nerdy get ups.

A couple of faves stylewise: Paper Moon and What’s Up Doc?. The former is a hilarious and touching tale of reluctant fatherhood (ironically, starring real life troubled daughter Tatum O’Neal). O’Neal looks impeccable throughout in fantastic 30s suits, a super haircut and moustache. In What’s Up Doc?, he plays a nerdy professor type, working a bow tie and thick glasses combo with all the attitude of a DirtyDirtyDancing/Ponystep boy de jour. Go rent those DVDS, (and we didn’t even mention Love Story).

AskMen.com Explore the Sartorial Savvy of Gianni Agnelli

By Will Reid on November 13th, 2008

portrait-06.jpgGianni Agnelli is a man constantly sourced as style inspiration to fashionistos across the world. From his flair for fine tailoring to his edgy take on accessories, this man had a look that was extremely well-executed and so timeless that it is still being copied on the catwalks of today. Agnelli’s grandson, Lapo Elkann, continues to wear all of Agnelli’s bespoke suits and it is no coincidence that Elkann has, in recent years, been hailed as a modern style icon by the likes of US Vogue and Esquire.

The article is full of great style advice such as, “if you want to dress like an iconoclast, your first step is to dismiss all of the old rules of fashion — just like Gianni Agnelli did when he wore his wristwatch over his sleeve cuff.”

By admin on April 9th, 2008

If you work in an office dominated by a smart casual dress code, you may find yourself actually wanting to wear a suit from time to time. For these people, Mad Men has become compulsive viewing. Not just because it’s a great show, but it harks back to a time when men actually wore all three pieces of their suit to work. Today’s average rucksack carrying, shirt and no tie wearing office worker could do with taking a few style tips from Don Draper (pictured left).
