Outfit Pick: Chinos, Tassels and Binary Clocks

By Will Reid on September 26th, 2008

outfitpickloafers.jpg

This outfit is based around my fashion task de jour (as if I could make that sound any more pretentious!) That task would be to make tasselled loafers wearable while avoiding the Ralph Lauren, polo-player trap so closely associated with this (in)famous yet iconic shoe.

I added items that were almost too pop-y for their own good; a binary watch, a Cassette-belt, a Madonna/80s idol tee from and a pair of Alexander McQueen cropped trousers from Oki-Ni.

This is a blend of vintage and modern that I would be more than willing to wear!

Brandish Poll: Would You Wear Unisex Clothing?

By Will Reid on September 23rd, 2008

American Apparel, the brand synonymous with androgyny and men in skintight jeans, has just launched their Unisex Oxford Shirt. I have three sisters and I’m no stranger to borrowing the odd jumper (actually, that would be reclaiming,) and I have in past borrowed Ralph Lauren shirts and vintage blazers for a better fit and a slimmer silhouette. Russell Brand, a man who walks on to a talk-show in a jersey tunic dress and girl’s jeans from Topshop but still manages to be a sex god, would be a great example of unisex dressing at its best but what do you think? Is it worth the sartorial risk when you might see a girl in the same tee as you?

Would you go Unisex- vote in our poll after the jump!

By admin on September 11th, 2008

men represent the sartorialist stylish man.jpgNow is a great time for menswear, everyone from designer to high street is paying more attention to men’s clothing and it seems like the bar has been well and truly raised. The Style Salvage duo kicked off their Men Represent scheme a while back, and now they’re dusting it off and want you involved. They want stylish men to email in their five essential wardrobe items, show off their outfits or just have a chat.

It’s an admirable idea, and I love anything which increases the profile of stylish men around the world. So if you want to become part of an international community of fashionistos get thee to Style Salvage!

GQ Upgrade: A style intervention

By admin on September 9th, 2008

gqupgrade.jpg
In addition to GQ’s well dressed rebel series, they are also hosting a fashion intervention for six men. Realizing there is a world of men who don’t pay any attention to their daily outfits, GQ sent out their fashion editors to upgrade the participant’s style.

The good thing about this article was that it didn’t attempt to change the person’s style, simply upgrading the look with similar clothes, colours and patterns in a much better fit. The bad side was that the ‘after’ looks could have been done just as well with more mid-range items, seeing as a 19 year old estimating contractor isn’t going to buy a Dolce & Gabbana blazer any time soon.

Love The Look: Menswear Maestro Michael Bastian at Fashion Rocks

By Will Reid on September 9th, 2008

Condé Nast’s fifth Fashion Rocks event was hardly devoid of well-dressed men: Valentino, Justin Timberlake (who’s fashion-savvy has become a matter of debate…well, for me anyway,) Gossip Girl’s Chace Crawford (who’s rumoured to have scored an up-coming VMAN cover.) My point is that, for a menswear designer, Michael Bastian more than held his own in this pantheon of celebs.

I love his vintage-looking blazer as well as his loafers and with an open shirt and a pair of well-tailored grey shorts, he is a vision of relaxed but high-fashion cool.

Notice the subtle pocket-square (an emblem of any well-dressed male) and devour this style inspiration.

Details rules of style: Victoria Beckham?

By admin on September 4th, 2008

detailsfeatures7v.jpgWhat do you do after you’ve had Lucas Ossendrijver, Consuelo Castilglioni and Michael Bastian giving out rules of style? If you’re Details, you get Victoria Beckham. Unsurprisingly, one of her rules is men shouldn’t wear skinny jeans (as she’s said before).

Her other rules are that style isn’t about money (as countless footballers demonstrate daily) and that men shouldn’t try too hard. The latter rule seems to be a recurring theme lately, but it’s a very vague rule which ultimately comes down to being comfortable in your own skin. Read the rest of Mrs Beckham’s rules after the jump.

Love The Look: Joshua Jackson Looks Pretty Good For An Ex-Dawson Creek Star

By Will Reid on September 4th, 2008

joshjackson.jpgThis week’s ‘Love The Look’ sees Joshua Jackson, and boyfriend of Diane Kruger, looking incredibly dapper in a Hollywood screen-star suit. I’m guessing that, by the waistcoat, details and fact that just about every Hollywood man at the moment is hooked, that the suit is by Tom Ford but who care’s about a lack of originality when you’ve made this much effort!

The details are the key: the perfect black buttons, the patent glint of the shoes, the bold bow-tie and silk (yet classy) lapel of the jacket. Joshua was attending the Jaeger-Le Coultre Gala at the 65th Venice Film Festival and while most men would look a bit pants next to a Chanel muse and seasoned-wearer of Dior, Elie Saab and Prada, Jackson proves he’s a worthy sartorial opponent.

WISHLIST: CDG Embossed Wallet at Start London

By Will Reid on September 3rd, 2008

cdg.jpgMy style pick for this week is this gorgeous Comme Des Garcons wallet from Start London. Mr Start, a past columnist for Brandish, has a great look and I can imagine this item slotting into his vintage chic and classic cool wardrobe quite nicely. The embossed leather is a great cerulean blue, made famous by the brilliant film ‘The Devil Wears Prada.’ The wallet has a zip around two sides and an “internal pocket to hold either coins, cards or bills.”

Karl Lagerfeld: A Cuddly Bear for Children of Today?

By Will Reid on September 2nd, 2008

klbear2.jpg

“Bears are very nice, as long as you are nice to them”

For a man who claims to not only feel no human emotion but to want no possessions, memories or immortilisation, Karl Lagerfeld sure likes to have his bedazzled fingers in a lot of different pies. After Grand Theft Auto, the Kaiser has collaborated with the German toy manufacturer Steiff on a Karl Lagerfeld teddy bear. That means a bear decked out in all the maestro’s signature pieces; the sunglasses, the rings, the high-collared shirt, skinny trousers, statement belt and skinny tie.

Brandish Feature: Drop-Crotch Demo

By Will Reid on August 22nd, 2008

Drop-crotch jeans have been dubbed the ‘future of denim’ and ‘the next skinny jean.’ I am an unbelievable skinny devotee (yes, I am scarred after wearing them in Summer-heat London and not even joking) and for this reason, I decided to road-test an exclusive pre-production sample pair from Trousers London. I ventured into Covent Garden to get the public opinion on whether the jeans were ‘(Drop-)HOT!’ or ‘PANTS!’ Pitying glances, envious looks, angry words and self-styling monologues; the Drop-Crotch jeans certainly attracted attention-but was it praise or pity? Stefano Pilati in Interview September 2008- Words Cannot Describe Him!

By Will Reid on August 22nd, 2008

interviewpilati1sept08.jpgI’ve just caught up on the contents of the September 2008 issue of the newly Fabien Baron-designed Interview magazine (we featured Marc Jacob’s cover a few months back) and found these pictures of Stefano Pilati, the YSL designer and all-round sartorial inspiration.

I can’t even write about them except to just point out the obvious: they’re jaw-droppingly brilliant.

WISHLIST: Alexander McQueen Photo-Print Blazer Down To £258 from £865!

By Will Reid on August 22nd, 2008

Thumbnail image for mcqueen.jpgWhile potentially worrying and probably not at all a good sign, Andy Warhol’s ‘Death Scenes’ have always interested me. His principle was that by repeating the same image of a man impaled on a lamp-post (that’s just one of the prints,) death became strangely banal. This blazer might not be all blood ‘n’ guts (which with McQueen’s history is rather surprising,) but it is undeniably interesting. With city scenes and a fitted shape, this jacket could be worn at work, in the park, at a party and even to a music festival. I like that Matches put it with jeans for a modern edge and if I could afford the £258 price tag, I would go for a crisp white shirt and an Alber Elbaz-style floppy bow-tie. In faded, purple velvet. *Sigh*

Brandish Poll: Executive Item Execution

By Will Reid on August 21st, 2008

EIE.jpgForgive that awful title but let me explain; Executive Item Execution (EIE) is the official ruin of an ever-so-stylish item as the result of a figure of authority telling you they have the same piece (and no, this has nothing to do with the fetish trend.)

To paraphrase and avoid any further confusion, I will put it into the context of my own life. Yesterday, a figure of authority commented on how “insane” my shoes were. This person went on to reveal that they actually had and often wore my shoes and broke into hysterical laughter as I stuttered and muttered a response that attempted to convey my anguish.

Call me vain, on a high-horse or simply unrealistic but how many names have been ruined for you by the child who used to pick their nose and eat it or mutter to themselves as they drew pictures of dead people? Sadly, the same applies to Margiela as it did to McDonalds (thanks, Morgan Spurlock.)

Feel the same? Vote in our poll below.
