We looked at some wonderful summer jackets yesterday featuring labels like Rene Gurskov and Moncler but for the more budget conscious among you here is a pick of summer jackets from the high street.
At the high end of the market Dexter Wong‘s cropped trench for Topshop is £80 which gets you smart tailoring and an unconventional shape. Burton‘s coated jacket is reduced to £25 and has a wonderfully masculine silhouette. K-Ways were the in thing when I was at school, and they’re back with collaborations from A.P.C and Limoland. This classic version is just £45 and the punchy yellow will team up a treat with smart grey trousers. Even cheaper is Uniqlo‘s windbreaker with a neon lining, combining functionality with good looks it’s only £19.99

Canny shoppers take note, the Topman sale is now on which means that if you do some careful shopping you can pick up some pieces that will take you through Spring into summer.
A grey peacoat is a great building block for your wardrobe, Topman’s cropped offering might not last you forever but at £15 it’s an unbeatable price. The Premium wine trousers will get you out of the officewear rut and again they’re at the bargain price of only £25. Tasselled loafers have been cropping up on our fashion radar for some time now, and if you want to dip your toes into the trend forking out £30 for Topman’s pair is a fairly risk-proof investment.

Brand Spotlight, Footwear, Top Five
By Will Reid on March 11th, 2009
Last week I was in search for a pair of school shoes. Beginning with classic brogues, I sampled a pair of black loafers and sneakily tried on a pair of Paul Smith Jermyns (with glorious plum laces) before ending up with a pair of not-so-exciting pointed Topman lace-ups. Inspired by this bout of school-shoe shopping I ventured onto Oki-Ni and came across their Doc Martens. Floral. Striped. Coloured. Neon. But then I came across their 1461 shoe and couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
A shoe, in simple black leather, that was more than double the price but half as nice as many of the shoes I had seen the previous day. These Dr. Martens did not look worth their £70 price tag, especially in comparison to my £35 Topman shoes. Granted, the Dr. Martens are probably better quality and might last longer but, are they even that easy on the eye? I, for one, wouldn’t want to be seen in them.
Fashion is fickle, even in times of economic recession. See after the jump for my Top 5 Best on a Budget Smart Shoes.

There’s something very liberating about the tote bag for guys. Clearly ‘recreational’ in outlook – its very simplicity makes it clear that you’re not lugging a laptop and however Boho your leatherware is there’s nothing quite so carefree as a simple cotton tote. We’ve been there with slogans and brand names in the last couple of years, both as intentional shout-outs and as the sought-after-though-indirectly-fashionable (hello Daunt Books bag carriers).
The most refreshing option for your cotton tote bag then is something purely graphic: Topman have great, cheap options available in abstract diamond or mesh patterns. Acne has a gorgeous still life print. Though my favourite remains Deer Dana who make up totes in any of their hand-drawn T-shirt designs – the most well-known of which being the Agyness Deyn print, as worn by, ahem Agyness Deyn. So now the only thing left to do is to check what’s needed for the park/beach/lunch date: Kiehls SPF moisturiser, Penguin Classic, chunky headphones and moleskine notepad. Go be carefree.

The dedicated menswear day at LFW is definitely cause for excitement, the names might not be as big as on the womenswear schedule but in terms of creativity and variety it’s hard to beat. Here’s a preview of some of our fave designers from the line-up, stay tuned for more.
We featured Carolyn Massey‘s Topman Lens collection back in July, a stickler for tradition with an eye for detail she produces contemporary menswear tailoring.

Topman’s Spring Break collection is about to hit the stores and it’s a poetically downbeat affair. Set against a backdrop of blustery coastline and caravans there’s more than a touch of ’80s era Morrissey going on here.
The clothes are retro, but not excessively so, modern cuts and and neat tailoring give an up to the minute feel.

Clothing, Designer Spotlight, Trends
By Will Reid on January 21st, 2009
Topman has revealed their latest ‘trend’ (read: mini theme-based collection) and with a name like ‘Berlin Wall,’ I was expecting rough skinny jeans and a fusion of This Is England skin-head with a kind-of Soviet, military cool. As always, the high-street label has delivered and the bleached skinny jeans are accentuated with textured trench coats and monochrome hoodies. I don’t quite see where the comic-strip boxers and novelty socks come into German reunification but I’m not complaining!
I have my eyes on the ‘Vintage Blue Skinny Jeans’ and the ‘Grey Marl Stitch-Line Hoody.’ Check out this link for the Trend video and full collection.

A quick Wiki of ‘duffle coat’ offers a great backstory and an explanation of why I was spelling it ‘duffel’. The name refers to the Belgian town of Duffel, where the thick woollen fabric used in making the coats originated. Marvellous fact!
Duffle coats make a great winter layer, and as February approaches you can pick up some bargains in the sale that won’t be out of date by next winter. The traditional colour is camel, but that can look a little indietastic, so go for muted greys, navys or good old black.

T-shirts, Polos & Shirts, Trends
By Colin Chapman on January 6th, 2009

The latest Buck magazine hit the stands last Friday and amongst its Gallic-themed pages is a great piece on the importance of denim this S/S. Highlighting the same Acne/Lanvin collaboration I’ve been talking about here recently it seems that there’s nothing to stop a full on indigo revolution once the sun finally breaks out.
Thing is: don’t limit yourself to jeans. Denim or chambray … there are so many ways to go blue aside from the obvious. My tip: try mixing denim into a formal outfit. A fitted denim shirt looks great with a knitted or chunky tie .. or dare I say it a silk bow tie for maximum contrast. Wear under a blazer or with tailored trousers and keep it pressed. Topman have a fantastic denim shirt instore, the type of shirt that you could find during a lucky day’s haul at a vintage boutique .. or pay £30 quid for now and not have to rummage through all that musty stuff.

Clothing, Outfit picks, Trends
By Will Reid on December 29th, 2008
As we endure the last week of 2008 and look back upon a year of fashion extremes, we still have the sartorial challenge of New Year’s Eve (NYE) ahead of us. While many opt for a loud, proud and (often) garish get-up, I am aiming to attempt a subtle luxury with the help of muted colours but opulent fabrics (velvet, silk, corduroy etc.)
The black cords above are a great base and, with a white shirt and the dove grey waistcoat pictured, they are easy to pull-off. The bow tie and vintage cuff-links are fun and appropriately over-the-top while the royal blue loafers are expensive but a great talking point.
Have fun, look great and, if you wake up the next morning to find your D&G loafers drowning in the contents of a red wine bottle, at least you know that you’re part of the ‘Walk of Shame Chic’ trend de jour!

Everyone is guilty of it, (well not everyone, I have a colour-coded Google Docs spreadsheet, natch!) but last-minute Christmas shopping can often leave you with gifts that have an air of desperation about them.
These picks have something for every wallet and they all carry an air of “What this? I bought this in November” insouciance. The Habitat lamp is a tasteful nudge for every Ikea junkie, and the watch will help the wearer get the ‘Sexy Cab Driver’ look which is going to be very important in ’09. A ‘To Do’ tattoo list is useful when compiling all those New Year’s resolutions, and all the more useful because they’re temporary. Resolution, what resolution?!

Clothing, Designer Spotlight, Outfit picks
By Will Reid on December 17th, 2008
Note to Editor: Can we feature pieces we bought just yesterday?
Now that I’ve cleared that up, I can proceed with this Christmas Outfit Pick. This polo is a great find and the loud print is definitely eye-catching. I found it in Topman yesterday afternoon and it was reduced to £10 from £16. In the image, the polo looks black but it is actually blue and the print looks slightly bigger (as opposed to the foot-print looking print pictured!)
I styled it with blue skinny jeans from Topman, two-tone trainers from Gargyle.com and a cable-knit beanie from Old Navy. If you want us to feature an outfit you have designed around a high-street item (from any country,) send it to isabelle@shinymedia.com.

Whilst the appetite for formal dressing in menswear shows no sign of slacking, inevitably certain details start to look a bit tired. Thus it is with the bow tie. Whilst some can carry this off with aplomb (as the cover star of last month’s debut Buck magazine showed) for others it was never going to be easy. There’s something novelty about the bow tie that risks looking too try-hard.

For AW08-09, Topman has created a video showcase of their latest collection- Block Heads. Model James Mclean poses in what Topman tells is a trend “inspired by the look of a Dickensian gypsy mixed with influences from the deep south.” We get a glimpse of what we will no doubt be wearing by Christmas and the video really projects what the look is all about- a poetic Grunge with not a slight hint of Luke Worrall.
“Bib front t-shirts are worn under a waistcoat and double breasted cardigans, topped off with a black padded donkey jacket for a military feel. Big accessories for this trend include a selection of trilby hats and scarves worn with tweed trainers or brogues.” Winter’s never looked so good!
Check the video here.
