What colour is your Johnson?

By Jonathan Smith on September 22nd, 2008

T-Shirt aficionados The Hundreds are branching out into footwear and with great anticipation are gearing up to release their first offering: The Johnson. A great name for what appears to be a great shoe, with a Pointer-esque silhouette and vibrant colours The Johnson slips nicely into the growing trainer market.

“A clean, understated shoe that serves to emphasize the wearer’s overall appearance. And it has everything to do with my roster of kicks growing up in Cali. It’s really a concoction of all my favorite shoes that are representative of youth subcultures: Chucks, Winos, Doc Martens, Vans… I even tried to have the laces staggered like a pair of early Jordans do from an above-perspective. I think I managed to pull off a very sophisticated shoe that retains some character, but is ultra basic when it comes to lines and silhouette.” From Sneaker Freaker.

The Johnson should be available soon from your favourite boutiques.

L.A Gear are back from the abyss

By Jonathan Smith on September 2nd, 2008

La-Gear-X-Patta-Party-1.jpgL.A Gear are back! “Hurrah!” I hear you cry, and you would be right to because L.A Gear are a cheer worthy brand. Harking from the same era as the Reebok Pump – one of the greatest trainers of all time – in an age when it wasn’t enough for trainers to be comfortable and look good, they had to have some other way to interact with such as a pump or lighting system. Judging by the success of the relaunch of the Reebok Pumps these should sell well and be highly sought after by sneaker freaks.

The trainer will be available at Patta from September 13th.

Love The Look: “Tiger Woods/Masters Edition” Nike Blazer Hi Premium

By Will Reid on August 20th, 2008

nike-blazer-hi-premium-tiger-woods-masters-edition-p.jpgI’m not really a golfer and so I can’t claim any deep knowledge/love/appreciation of golf. I can however show knowledge/love/appreciation of knit V-necks with funky patterns and an equally passionate knowledge/love/appreciation of the new “Tiger Woods/Masters Edition” Nike Blazer Hi Premium.

Kix and the City reports that “to pay tribute to Tiger’s dominance at the Masters, Nike is set to release the “Tiger Woods/Masters Edition” Nike Blazer Premium Hi. The “Tiger/Masters” Nike Blazer Hi features a White/Black Leather upper with a faux Tiger hair Swoosh, a Masters-like logo at the heel tab, and a Green Hoody, symbolic of the Master’s trademark Green Jacket, on the tongue.”
For more images of this brilliant shoe check out Kix and the City.

By admin on June 18th, 2008

alfie trainers.jpg
Don’t you hate it when something doesn’t fit into your overall look but you still like it? That’s how I feel about these Alife Everybody Mid Lux Tweed trainers. Part of Alie’s A/W 08 collection, these are the kind of trainer that makes you want to buy a few matching pieces just to accommodate it.

Retailing at $152, they’ll only be available in upscale stores and boutiques. There’s no word on UK availability just yet but there’s still time for that to change.

Converse Leather Jacket trainers

By admin on June 11th, 2008

We rarely feature Converse because they’re so popular there’s next to no point in doing so. Even the special editions are worn by every Tarquin, Richard and Harold. With all that said, I am particularly looking forward to these leather jacket trainers.

The zips are useless, but they’re also the detail that sets these apart from standard Converse’s. Most special edition All Stars just have a snazzy pattern or colourway, so it’s nice to see a pair actually deviate from the blueprint for once. These will be available in specialised stores from July.

Superga are the new fashion cliche

By admin on June 10th, 2008

superga trainers.JPG
Fashion writing is often ridiculed for outlandish phrases, flowery prose and a reliance on clichés. I’d like to add to all of the above by declaring that Superga are the new Springcourt.

Like Springcourt, they make tennis shoes. Like Springcourt, they’ve got some history, starting in the 1930′s. Like Springcourt, they’re based in Europe – Italy to be exact. And like Springcourt, prices start from around £35.

Leather Puma Clyde trainers

By admin on April 29th, 2008

As you might have guessed, we’re quite the fans of Puma here. You could say that Puma is our version of crack. No matter how much we try to stay away from it, we just keep on going back for one more hit. This will be the last time you see Puma on Brandish. This week.

The reasons why we’ve decided to hit that crackpipe one more time are these sky blue leather Clydes. Puma have made Clyde their staple shoe, offering variation upon variation of what was once a basketball shoe. Although they should pop up on the official Puma site soon, for now they’re available on Rakuten.

Vans x Number (N)ine

By admin on April 24th, 2008

Vans, who already have collections with APC and Supreme, have now added Number (N)ine to their extensive list of collaborators. With Number (N)ine’s status on the rise, it looks like a beneficial partnership for both brands rather than piggybacking. But none of that would matter if the trainers were ugly.

Although the collaboration is an exciting one, the trainers themselves are decidedly less so. They look good, but the colours look a little dull. The design on the side looks like a carpet in the 70′s, in a good way. If these tickle your fancy then you can get these from selected retailers from May 10th.

Vans Vault Chukka Boot

By admin on February 26th, 2008

300_080222_vans01_01The chukka boot is one of my favourite styles from Vans. It’s juicy looking. This season’s collection from Vans Vault includes a Chukka with this excellent zig-zag design in a very warm wool and suede. It’s available in black and white but also in a truly horrible baby blue and beige colourway. It’s surprising how much changing the colours can affect the design.

In any case, the black and white version is great and is has just arrived at We Sold Out. Yours for a reasonable €80 Euros or £70 from Size? (works out the same with shipping to UK).

Lacoste Ibiza Block

By admin on February 19th, 2008

These puppies are gorgeous. Great colour combination, great design, great shape. They’re amazing.
They have a really authentic eighties look to them – something about grey mixed with colour is very evocative of the era. Also the leather (or could it be leatherette? Do I dare dream?) padding on the uppers is just divine.
You can get hold of them from the ever reliable We Sold Out for €100 (about £75).

Etnies Plus

By admin on February 19th, 2008

Etnies Plus is the more fashion forward line from Etnies. But of course they’d never say ‘fashion forward’, those were my words. What Etnies say is that it’s a “a truly one-of-a-kind, numbered, limited-edition shoe series”. Rather than talk about namby pamby fashion, they turn it into something masculine and competitive, but really it’s the same thing.
Whatever you call it, it’s a rose that smells sweet. The colours are proper gorgeous, I love them, and the shapes are really contemporary – especially the Junior on the far left.
Left to right we have Junior, Rocksteady and Upsetter styles. They are only available in the States as far as I know, so if anyone’s going on holiday, can they pick me up a pair? Thanks.

Onitsuka Tiger and Mini do the business

By admin on January 14th, 2008

The 80′s trend started out as one movement
but then fragmented into whatever you took to be 80′s. On one side was the
coloured jeans 80′s trend, thankfully that was short lived. On the other side
was the 80′s as seen in the film “The
“, starring down-to-earth cockney superbloke Danny Dyer. If you’re
looking to complete your superbloke look then these Onitsuka Tiger trainers
should do the job. Or the business, if you’re into bad puns.

Inspired by Mini, Onitsuka Tiger have
sought to bring all the best elements from the car to your feet. In case you’re
wondering, that doesn’t mean these are the adult form of Heelys. They’re available
in cream, black and brown, so you should be able to find one that matches a
Sergio Tacchini track jacket.

Pointer Shoes

By admin on December 20th, 2007

MathiesonburgundypairI do like these puppies. They look a bit like a cross between the Visvim moccasins and a Nike Blazer. They come in a range of delightful colours including this shade of burgundy which makes me think of mulled wine, but that’s clearly just the excesses of this time of year. Honestly, I’m looking forward to the January detox – if I don’t become diabetic and lapse into a hyperglycaemic coma before then.
Anyway, these shoes are from Pointer, a home-grown trainer brand who specialise in simple alternatives to the “increasingly technical trainers and hyped-up limited edition sneakers” on the market. Sniffy buggers. Still, they’ve got a point, in this case less is more.
Click on the pic for a closer inspection.

One Button suits – the way to go for the smart office party

By admin on December 18th, 2007

If you need to make an impression for your
Christmas party, a one button suit may be the way to go. They’re sharp enough
to make you look like you’ve made an effort, but are still casual enough to
wear with a pair of trainers. This Ute Ploier suit is a
perfect example of what you should be looking for. The standout piece of this
outfit would be the trainers and it’s here where you need to get things right.

Whilst Chuck Taylors can look good with a suit,
they can also make you look like you dragged any old pair of trainers from the
back of your wardrobe. Nanny State’s patent
leather trainers
go well with suits and smart attire in general, whilst
still looking like trainers.
