Flyknit Experience: We test out the new Nike Lunar 1+ in a running ‘flash mob’ along The Thames

By shinychris on March 5th, 2013

Nike Flyknit launch

If you started running a few years ago, when it was still disparagingly referred to as jogging, you know how heavy trainers used to be – like wearing lead weights on your feet. Not any more. Manufacturers are literally tripping over each other to bring the latest lightweight fabric technologies to our feet.  Last month saw the arrival of the Adidas Boost, now it’s the turn of Nike with the latest incarnation of its Flyknit technology.

Unlike some trainers which are made out of several pieces of fabric, the selling point of the latest Flyknit Lunar 1+ running shoes, is that they are made out of a single piece of fabric. This, Nike claims, helps to reduce friction and keeps the weight down because there isn’t any need for stitching or glue. Certainly the Flyknit Lunar 1+ trainers I ran in at the Nike event at London’s Somerset House were very lightweight indeed (just a shade of 200 grammes). But they were also very comfortable too. This is partly down to the ‘steam-before-you- sprint’ service where the trainers are placed in a steamer for 30 seconds before wearing them for the first time so they are moulded to your feet correctly. But it’s also due to the Lunarlon midsole that gives you extra spring in your step.

To test out the Lunar1+ running shoes, Nike had advertised for a group of runners via Facebook to take part in the ‘Flyknit Experience’. So off we went in a big gang, running along the banks of the Thames along with British middle distance runner, Hannah England (World Championship Silver Medallist, 1500m). It was all good fun, like a giant running flash mob, armed with neon coloured batons. Up we went onto the Millennnium Bridge, running up the steps to the theme tune to Rocky then across the bridge (thankfully no longer wobbly) up to Waterloo and back round to Somerset House on the north bank near Temple. Along the way several activities were planned, most of which seemed to involve shouting and screaming and waving our batons in the air – no wonder  pedestrians seemed to scatter in fear, as over 100 Nike-clad runners approached at speed.

Nike Flyknit pink and blackGiven that before the Nike run, I hadn’t actually been running for a month because of a football related foot injury I actually felt pretty good at the end of it. Whether that was because of the Nike trainers, or the thrill of running around central London on a crisp, clear night I don’t know. But one thing is for sure: the Flyknit Lunar 1+ running shoes felt very comfortable. As they are so light weight I thought running on the pavements may have taken their toll on my legs, but in fact they felt really bouncy too, giving me an extra spring in my step.

Obviously with a price tag of £140 they aren’t exactly cheap. But for serious running enthusiasts, especially those who belong to running clubs, they are a very sensible investment indeed. And while the pink and black pair I tried out wouldn’t be my first choice of colour, there are several colour ways to suit different tastes.

To find about more about the technology of the shoe see our interview with Nike product ‘Ekin’ (a product manager who knows Nike back to front, geddit) Sam Adams.

Sorry it’s a little dark (and pink) but it was late by the time we finished our run.

And here you can see my pair of Nike Lunar 1+ coming out of the steamer, before putting them on before my first run. Looks great doesn’t it, like they’ve been cryogenically frozen for thousands of years and are just seeing daylight for the first time!

You can see Hannah England, Silver medalist, World Championship 1500m talking about Nike and her training regime here.

This is what a £60,000 t-shirt looks like

By Gerald Lynch on August 1st, 2012

I once bought a vintage second-hand Prince Purple Rain tour t-shirt on eBay for £80. It felt like the most extravagant garment I’d ever bought at the time at a score short of £100 (and even more so when it actually arrived, stained and moth-eaten as it was).

But £60,000 for a t-shirt? That’s just madness.

But that’s almost what an incredibly limited edition t-shirt has just sold for on eBay.

The one-off all-over print Nike Air Yeezy 2 t-shirt, created by artist WilFry sold on eBay earlier this month for a staggering $90,300 (£57,789.68).

The t-shirt was part of promotional items surrounding the launch of the Nike Air Yeexy 2 trainers, a collaboration between the sneaker brand and rapper Kanye West. 3,000 pairs of the platinum/grey trainers were made, but few other than Kanye himself would have been able to afford the t-shirt.

S&M handcuff trainers? From Adidas???

By Gerald Lynch on June 15th, 2012

Looking for a new pair of kinky boots? Jeremy Scott has been showing off his latest styles for Adidas’s fall/winter 2012 collection, and may have something that’ll crack your whip.

At first glance, his purple/navy/grey/orange trainers don’t stray too far from the usual Roundhouse Mid mould. That’s until you see the day-glo handcuff and chain bolted onto the back of each shoe.

Elsewhere, you’ll spot a grey striped pattern now sitting across the tongue and strap.

You’ll have to wait till the end of the year to get your rubber-gloved hands on them. Makes you wonder what else Scott’s adding to his line. Fingers crossed for a paddle on the tongue…

Reebok X Marvel Superhero Sneakers: Avengers, X-Men, Spider-Man trainers!

By Gerald Lynch on June 12th, 2012

Marvel Captain America Reebok Ventilator

Seriously, what a year to be a comic-book fan. First the Avengers movie kicks up a storm in cinemas all over the world, then that’s soon to be followed by The Amazing Spider-Man and Batman Dark Knight Rises, and soon after that is the Judge Dredd movie and the Watchmen prequel comics.

And now these totally, totally ace superhero sneakers from Reebok. Above is a preview gallery of the new Reebok X Marvel collection, a collaboration between the comic book giants and the footwear veterans.

Put together by designer Anthony Petrie, these limited edition trainers include The Spider-Man Insta Pump, Captain America Ventilator and Wolverine Pump Fury HLS, the Sabretooth Night Sky Mid, Deadpool Pump Omni Lite, Red Skull Pump Omni Lite HLS, Chamber Blast, Venom Night Storm HLS as well as Freestyles for Emma Frost and Black Widow.

It’s a footwear fetish for “true believers”, as Stan Lee used to call his loyal readers!

What’s really great about the collection though is the attention to detail. I love how the Reebok logo is slashed on the Sabretooth pair, while we could totally see Andrew Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man running around in those webhead-inspired Insta Pumps.

We’re totally loving these. While you’re at it, check out Petrie’s personal site. He’s got mad skillz.

These gold trainers will always believe in your sole

By Gerald Lynch on May 21st, 2012

We bling out pretty much everything these days. From ruby-encrusted wristwatches to diamond-studded laptops, if there’s a surface to be made shinier (and a cash flow as rapid as Niagara Falls to be squandered) then you can bet your bottom dollar we’ll decorate our tat with enough glittery bits to make Tutankhamen blush.

We thought we’d seen everything until we saw the Indulgences No. 5  from designer Kenneth Courtney.

But, GOLD! You’ve got the power to know you’ll never be able to afford these trainers.

A limited run of five pairs, Courtney’s trainer series sees a pair of  Nike Dunk High sneakers dipped in 24K gold. They’ll cost you $4,000 (£2,472).  And probably the use of your ankles, too.

If you’ve more money than sense,  grab them here.

Nike LeBron Elite 9 Varsity Maize trainers out now

By Gerald Lynch on May 14th, 2012

On the lookout for a new pair of basketball shoes, and still want to look the buisness on the court? Check out these limited edition trainers from Nike.

The Nike LeBron Elite 9 Varsity Maize launched over the weekend alongside the Air Jordan 4 Cav and Zoom KD IV Aunt Pearl, and come with a seriously eye-catching yellow upper. All eyes will be on your feet, not the ball as you weave around in these.

Elsewhere, the trainers sport Max and Zoom Air cushioning and Pro Combat-style padding, along with inset carbon fiber wings.

However, you’re going to have to move faster than Jordan himself if you want to bag yourself a pair. A limited edition, they’re not even available at Nike’s own online NikeStore.com shop. Instead, you’re going to have to head instore to grab a pair while stocks last. There will also be a scant few pairs over on the FootLocker web store.

Expect to pay around the $250 mark on import for these beauties, not including shipping. See them from all sides in the gallery above.

Lusting after McQueen S/S10: time machine, please?

By cchapman on July 15th, 2009

alexander-mcqueen-spring-2010-sneaker-02-405x540.jpgIt seems in fashion we always want to be at the next destination, now. So it is that we haven’t even hit August yet and some of us are already thinking ahead to what to wear in the fall. Of course, the fact that collections are shown out of sync with actual seasons doesn’t help. An extreme example I’m faced with is wanting ALL of the McQueen shoe collection from S/S10 right now.

Selectism.com have been giving sneak previews of the McQueen S/S10 shoe collection, when THOSE paint splattered lovelies, will apparently also be available as trainers. Picking up on the folk-art patchwork and paint splattering seen in his recent film-presentation-as-show in Milan, the trainers seen here feature both of these themes as gorgeous detailing. Patience is, I guess, a virtue but in the wicked world of fashion it is sometimes sorely tested.

Dream rubber: Margiela’s trainers-to-die-for

By Colin Chapman on February 6th, 2009

Margiela_trainers.jpg
If, like me, your winter footwear has taken a battering given the recent weather conditions you may well be looking ahead to your next shoe purchase. Those winter boots that started off as a treat for chilled feet may be looking a bit soggy – time for the new. Clearly it’s too soon to be considering proper summer footwear (take note damp plimsoll wearers) so some warmth and practicality is still needed. The new batch of Margiela trainers at OkNi are the stuff of dreams. I particularly like the hi-tops with their all-white, 60s Cardin-esque space-ageness (a bit 80s Travel Fox too).

Which do you prefer? Lanvin’s trainers or Kanye’s kicks for Louis Vuitton

By admin on January 26th, 2009

44% of you thought Kanye West‘s mullet was bad, but what do you think of his trainers? West recently designed a pair of trainers for Louis Vuitton, The 808s and Heartbreaks star spoke to Dazed Digital about his inspiration for the design: “They’ve got a sci-fi influence with this flap up at the back. It came from a scene in ‘Dune’ where there was this jacket with a huge collar. Also Japanese pop art.” He also said: “I’m a walking billboard but to be able to now create something from scratch is amazing.”

But how do they compare to Lanvin‘s trainers? Do you prefer the 80′s nostalgia and sportswear chic of the LV/Yeezy pair or the mix of materials and subtle colour matching of the Lanvins? Jump and tell us what you think in our poll…

Newsflash: Kanye West Designs Trainers for Louis Vuitton

By Will Reid on January 6th, 2009

After months of rumours and hipster-praying, Hypebeast has confirmed the rumour that Kanye West is to design a pair of trainers for Louis Vuitton. The trainers appear rather bland (they’re just white high-tops,) but they might prove to be a valuable base for many a winter outift. Kanye tells the online fashion magazine that the trainers are to be released in June of this year.

I wait with bated breath!

Will’s Christmas Outfit Picks: Topman ‘Exclamation Mark Print’ Polo

By Will Reid on December 17th, 2008

outfit.jpg

Note to Editor: Can we feature pieces we bought just yesterday?

Now that I’ve cleared that up, I can proceed with this Christmas Outfit Pick. This polo is a great find and the loud print is definitely eye-catching. I found it in Topman yesterday afternoon and it was reduced to £10 from £16. In the image, the polo looks black but it is actually blue and the print looks slightly bigger (as opposed to the foot-print looking print pictured!)

I styled it with blue skinny jeans from Topman, two-tone trainers from Gargyle.com and a cable-knit beanie from Old Navy. If you want us to feature an outfit you have designed around a high-street item (from any country,) send it to isabelle@shinymedia.com.

Air Max Lite: Nike’s bastard child

By Jonathan Smith on October 15th, 2008

nike-air-max-light-2008-fall-winter-01.jpg

Though these have recieved great praise on other blogging sites, I’m inclined to say that these two Air Max Lites from the Fall/Winter collection kinda suck balls. Both colourways are horrendous and they both look like cheap knock offs you buy in the pub- which, if you didn’t know, is not a good look.

Thinking about it the whole Air Max Lite line has been a constant disappointment to me and seeing as they have on the whole been ignored by collectors (possibly due to the fact that they lack any exclusivity what so ever) are a disappointment to everyone else. An unstoppably stream of terrible colourways and printed designs has left the whole AML line with only a few viable options in the blander colours. Does anyone actually like the bastard child of the Air Max range? Answers on a postcard to isabelle at shinymedia.com.

If you were interested, and I kind of hope you’re not, then both these colourwas are available now from select (but probably not that select) Nike retailers.

Farfetch, a virtual smorgasbord of menswear

By admin on October 14th, 2008

farfetch walter van bierendonck helmut lang date designer.jpg
I wrote about Farfetch last week on Catwalk Queen but proportionally speaking it’s far bigger news for menswear. There aren’t many online stores that can boast designers like Jil Sander, YSL as well as newer names like Surface 2 Air all under one roof and when you consider the dearth of options on the high street a site like this is even more vital.
Here are a few of my picks from the site, a really satisfying pair of trainers, a witty patterned scarf and the Helmut Lang shirt is the most perfect shade of grey I’ve ever seen. Full product details after the cut.

Jeremy Scott and Adidas- I really like it, I mean hate it

By Jonathan Smith on October 8th, 2008

jeremyscott.jpgThe first lovely preview of the Adidas x Jeremy Scott colab is upon us, and I’m looking to those who boldly go where I choose not to… no, fear to tread. Those who say yes to leopard print and knocked off Armani. To those who still rock a greasy mullet and large faux jewel earings. That’s right, I’m looking to the Portuguese and their king Cristiano Ronaldo.

Jeremy Scott has created quite an enigma in this line, pieces being both awesome and totally shit all at the same time, which is quite an achievement. For example the sneakers have wings on them- awesome, but then they are gold and have wings on them- totally shit. All pieces are eye catching to say the least and do genuinely have a little extra oomph on what Adidas has produced in the past with any of its previous colabs (Yohji Yamamto and Stella McCartney spring to mind)- which is definitely a plus. Still I’m left wondering who exactly is going to wear any of it. Oh. Ronaldo.

Jump through for more images.
