Style Safari – Retro Sunglasses guide

By Stefano on May 20th, 2013

With summer fast approaching (- or due to make an appearance any time now) your look is not complete without a set of shades. With so many different styles to choose from and plenty of good High Street versions at a fraction of the cost, some of the coolest ones right now have got to be retro inspired ones. Sunglasses have become iconic items in fashion terms, with certain styles becoming synonymous with particular famous people in history; From James Dean, Gregory Peck, to Roy Orbison and Karl Lagerfeld (- and not forgetting Tom Cruise in Top Gun, if we have to…) here’s our top 12 cool retro picks…

Stocking fillers – 2012′s 20 weirdest gadgets and gifts

By Stefano on November 29th, 2012

Ever wanted a pair of sunglasses that can shoot video? A USB based hand warming system? Or even a cushion that can moonlight as a remote control? Nope me neither. But I sure love reading about them.

Here then are 2012′s weirdest gadgets. Some are actually quite cool, others are borderline useful, but all are just plain weird.

Stockists under the gallery.

Electronic Guitar T shirt £29.99

Picture 1 of 20

Ok, it might just look like a black T shirt with a pretty naff design, but this is actually one of the hottest bloke gifts this Christmas. That's because that guitar print is (kind of) a real guitar which lets you play chords and strum along to your favourite rawk tunes. It even comes with a mini amp that apparently goes up to 11. If you are more Hot Chip than Van Halen there's also a drum machine kit in the range too.

Stripy scarves must die!

By admin on January 8th, 2009

Stripe scarves are starting to become so ubiquitous that they’re joining Taz socks and Homer Simpson ties in the naffness leagues, not any old stripe scarf though, it’s the fine stripe stretchy knit scarf with usually comes in a burgundy melange of colours and has fringing on the ends.

Originated by Paul Smith who tried to update the wool school scarf (which is still a glorious accessory despite the association) and then copied by every high street retailer going, this is the one item that everyone seemed to get for Christmas if they didn’t already own it. Pick a tube carriage at random and you can bet at least ten men have got one of these scarves round their neck. No more please!

Stick around to see our alternatives to the stripy scarf tomorrow and jump through to find out who the culprits are. Are you a proud owner of a stripy scarf and can’t see what the fuss is about? Let me know on our Facebook Blog page.

Present Tense: last minute Christmas gifts

By admin on December 18th, 2008

Everyone is guilty of it, (well not everyone, I have a colour-coded Google Docs spreadsheet, natch!) but last-minute Christmas shopping can often leave you with gifts that have an air of desperation about them.
These picks have something for every wallet and they all carry an air of “What this? I bought this in November” insouciance. The Habitat lamp is a tasteful nudge for every Ikea junkie, and the watch will help the wearer get the ‘Sexy Cab Driver’ look which is going to be very important in ’09. A ‘To Do’ tattoo list is useful when compiling all those New Year’s resolutions, and all the more useful because they’re temporary. Resolution, what resolution?!

Outfit Pick: Gauche, Awkward and Isaac…

By Will Reid on September 16th, 2008

outfitpick2.jpgWith a new of series of Heroes about to begin, the unfortunate death of Yves Saint Laurent and the number of Clark Kent-y characters about in the most recent blockbusters, my style radar is tuned to the male who’s gauche, awkward and geeky in the best way possible. Think of 1970s art students carrying open sketchbooks around Paris, Isaac Mendez of Heroes lounging around his studio in over-sized chinos and Marc Jacobs around his grunge era (which means big glasses, baggy jumpers and lots of corduroy.) I took a risk with mixing the denim shirt with dark jeans but the two items together are a wearable look that anyone can pull off.

Check out the product details after the jump and see how geeky you can get this winter- Argyle jumper anyone?

Full Circle striped polo shirt

By admin on June 17th, 2008

fullcircle polo.jpgIf, for some bizarre reason, you haven’t hopped onto the Madras train yet we are still offering alternatives. Alternatives that don’t stray outside of the nautical look, but alternatives nonetheless.

We’ve featured a John Smedley version of this polo a while back but let’s face it – you’re not going to spend £122 on a polo shirt. This Full Circle polo is pretty much identical, I haven’t counted the stripes or anything, but I’d guess they’d be around the same amount. The FC one also has a pen pocket, something the Smedley one doesn’t even have. And to top it all off, it’s only £38.

Penfield Oxon bag

By admin on May 7th, 2008

penfieldbag.jpg

Whilst leather bags are great and all, there’s just something very un-summery about them. The material is pretty heavy and doesn’t cope with hot weather very well. Canvas, on the other hand, is a lighter material and copes much better in the sun. If you’ve been trying to complete a couple of looks, then look no further this Penfield oxon bag.

Available in college professor-like brown and nautical stripes, these bags have the added bonus of being able to complete two separate looks. If you’ve been slowly building on your nautical look, then this will the piece that will finish it off and all for a pretty reasonable £50.

American Apparel sunglasses

By admin on March 28th, 2008

Urban Outfitters are clearly trying to expand their online market. First, they introduce several top quality brands to their online store and then they unleash this collection of sunglasses  on us.

Fighting for the same market as American Apparel has even made them lower their price point, with all these sunnies costing a mere £15.

J.Lindeberg Jumper

By admin on March 27th, 2008

jl jumper.jpg

Urban Outfitters have taken their sweet time getting their online store the same amount of brands as their physical store but they got there in the end. Now they have brands like D.I.E, Surface to Air, Filippa K and this J.Lindeberg jumper.

Whilst it does look slightly unremarkable in this picture, the blue colour they’ve used is a lot more vibrant than it appears in the picture. It’s an odd shade, somewhat between electric and navy blue and the piece stands out purely because it’s a shade you won’t have seen before.  At £80, it’s only slightly more expensive than a Lyle & Scott tee and you won’t have to suffer the indignity of some pie eating slob wearing the same top as you.

T-shirt for under a fiver from Urban Outfitters

By admin on January 29th, 2008

UrbanoutfittersteeI’m surprised this T-shirt has gone into clearance. There’s nowt wrong with it. The Kandinsky inspired print is really rather fine and the wide round neck and light weight fabric are very on trend. Interestingly, it’s 70% bamboo, which is another one of those fibres which is being touted as having a low impact on the environment. As it grows so quickly and doesn’t need replanting once harvested, it makes it a more sustainable crop than others.

If you’re not convinced by those arguments, perhaps this will sway you: it’s £4.99.

How to: Cardigans

By ShinyMedia on April 20th, 2007

Topmancardie_2
The rise of the cardigan has surely sounded the death knell for the blazer and jeans look. A few years ago a blazer looked edgy but it’s now only worn by sloaney types, especially with distressed and ripped bootcut jeans, which surely are a confection of the devil. The cardigan offers a much leaner, modern silhouette; it’s a natural partner for skinny or slim jeans and can be dressed up with smart trousers and a slim tie. Simon Amstell does this look perfectly, teaming a dark cardie with a
floral shirt, or choosing various tones of khaki and olive green for an
eye-pleasing cardigan, tie and shirt combo. I’ve come up with two cardigan outfits so if you are one of the few people who haven’t purchased a cardigan there won’t be any excuse not to. See after the jump for images and product links.

Andy Capp t-shirt from Urban Outfitters

By Isabelle on March 26th, 2007

Tshirt
Pledge your allegiance to the olden days, and all things British with Urban Outfitters’ Andy capp t-shirt. It comes in grey marl and black. Andy Capp been lazing, boozing and arguing since 1957, and since his creator Reg Whyte’s death in 1998 the strip has been lovingly kept going. For a truly authentic look you’ll need to accessorise the t-shirt with a fag, a pigeon and a pint of bitter. You can get the t-shirt for £25 which should leave enough change for a trip t’pub. See after the jump for the black version.

Umbro by Kim Jones

By Isabelle on March 20th, 2007

Kimjonesumbro

Umbro must be looking to move away from their beer boy image with their collaboration with Kim Jones. Understandably so, as the usual stuff is a bit naff, but the Kim Jones collections are fresh and cater for a range of styles. My favourite items from his A/W 07 collections are the wetlook windcheaters, I’m a bit obsessed with that fabric. I’m a bit disappointed that some of the shoes still look like those classic plastic market trainers, and not in a good way, but one step at a time I suppose. You can get your hands on their clothes at Urban Outfitters and Selfridges across the UK
