Arsenal update: Victor Wanyama, Micah Richards and St Etienne pair targeted

By Stefano on March 11th, 2013

A couple of days Alex Song ago hinted that he might like to return to North London after his disastrous season at Barcelona. But according to the Metro Arsene Wenger isn’t tempted. He has set his sights on
Celtic’s combative midfielder Victor Wanyama.

The Keynan has been very impressive this season, especially in the Champions League and Wenger is keen to land a player that he knows could be secured for less than £10 million.

The deal that could change all this is if Barcelona follow through with an offer for Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen. It could then mean players heading to The Emirates (Song, Villa?) in return.

Another player who could be wearing red and white come the summer is Man City’s Micah Richards. The player who has been a long term target of Arsene Wenger could be leaving City in the summer and may possibly be seen by Arsenal as a replacement for Bacary Sagna.

The Mail reports that in addition to Richards, Maicon, Wayne Bridge, Scott Sinclair and Roque Santa Cruz are among those likely to move on.

Although he is undoubted talented the player has struggled with a series of injuries that have kept him out of the City team.

Finally The Mirror reports on how Gilles Grimandi has been spending his time recently. Arsenal’s scout has apparently been keeping tabs ion the St Etienne pair Stephane Ruffier and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

French international keeper Ruffier has had a great season with St Etienne among the meanest defences in Ligue 1.

Meanwhile Gabon centre-forward Aubameyang is the second top scorer in the division.

Arsenal update: the club is tracking Celtic’s Victor Wanyama

By Stefano on February 13th, 2013

Commiserations to Celtic who were pretty unlucky and the victim of some iffy refereeing in their Champions League game against Juventus last night.

But with progression in the CL unlikely and a rather uneventful stroll to the Scottish Premiership a cert again next year the English vultures are starting to circle.

And top of the list of players who could be heading south is the Kenyan Victor Wanyama.

According to The Mail Arsenal apparently had the powerful holding midfielder watched last night and are mulling over a move for him in the summer.

The club are painfully aware that they have never replaced Alex Song and although Mikkel Arteta and Aaron Ramsey can both play in the holding role they lack the physical presence required when Arsenal need to be more defensively minded,

The paper also suggest that the club are keen on Etienne Capoue, who they apparently almost signed on transfer deadline day and West Ham’s Mohamed Diame.

I suspect that the Arsenal scouting team might be spending a fair bit of time in Glasgow in the coming months.

Arsenal update: Wenger considers Celtic’s Victor Wanyama. Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa in the balance

By Stefano on January 22nd, 2013

In the last couple of days an old rumour has re-surfaced – the one that sees Celtic’s Victor Wanyama joining the club as a holding midfielder. Wanyama has been impressive for Celtic in both the Scottish Premiership and The Champions League and would be a straight replacement for Alex Song who left for Barcelona in the summer.

The Indie says

Having closely monitored the progress of Wanyama in Celtic’s successful progress through the Champions League group stages, Arsenal have made the Kenya international aware that he is a strong option for the position. Though Wanyama’s performances have seen his asking price rise above £10m, the 21-year-old’s wages are comparatively low and he has refused to extend a contract with Celtic that expires in 2015.

Wanyama has another string to his bow in that he can also play in central defence and Arsenal could add depth in this area to cover for Johann Djorou who left on loan earlier in the window.

Wanyama has also scored seven times in 32 appearances this season.

Meanwhile the ongoing saga of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa has taken an interesting turn with the player apparently not making it to Newcastle to complete a medical which would seal the move of the defender from Montpelier to the north east.

According to The Telegraph Newcastle still expect Yanga-Mbiwa to arrive on Tyneside, with the club blaming the weather for the delay.

It says

Arsenal have been in contact with Montpellier after news of Newcastle’s bid was leaked in France to ask about the size of their offer, but they have not made a formal bid.

Whether Yanga-Mbiwa has decided to wait to see if an offer comes from the north London club remains to be seen, although that might explain the delay in his travel to the north east.

Finally a quick reminder of the story that broke yesterday afternoon that David Villa has told the Spanish paper Sport that he wants out of the club during the window.

Villa is of course a major Arsenal target with the player rumoured to be keen on a move to North London and Arsenal had apparently readied a team to jet to Barcelona to secure his signature.
