As we endure the last week of 2008 and look back upon a year of fashion extremes, we still have the sartorial challenge of New Year’s Eve (NYE) ahead of us. While many opt for a loud, proud and (often) garish get-up, I am aiming to attempt a subtle luxury with the help of muted colours but opulent fabrics (velvet, silk, corduroy etc.)
The black cords above are a great base and, with a white shirt and the dove grey waistcoat pictured, they are easy to pull-off. The bow tie and vintage cuff-links are fun and appropriately over-the-top while the royal blue loafers are expensive but a great talking point.
Have fun, look great and, if you wake up the next morning to find your D&G loafers drowning in the contents of a red wine bottle, at least you know that you’re part of the ‘Walk of Shame Chic’ trend de jour!

The saga of how to wear your waistcoat is reaching epic proportions and I hear there are plans to make the story into a musical in 2012.
You might have to endure a few Boyzone tunes but that’s no big deal when you also have TV on the Radio to sing along to, and now the Futureheads are getting in on the act. Vocalist Barry Hynde sported a subdued combo of black waistcoat and grey t-shirt for their gig at the Astoria in London.

The Antony Price collection (click here to see the gallery) made its Topman debut on Friday and although I haven’t been instore yet I’m keen to see how it’s selling.
There’s a good selection of quality suiting and some quirky accessories like the eye print tie and the purple bow tie which will lend a little character to your outfit without quite being on the Tazmanian Devil/Homer Simpson novelty sock level of kook.

Roger Daltrey is the latest in our famous waistcoat wearers, after Boyzone, Daniel Radcliffe and TV on the Radio’s Kyp Malone before him.
Appearing onstage with the rest of The Who in Canada recently he was sporting said waistcoat, fine weave shirt, black jeans and black motorcycle boots. What do you think, is the outfit a success or a flop? Take our poll after the jump!

TV on the Radio sort of passed me by, I always thought they were one of those generic indie ‘four boys and a guitar’ type bands but listening to tracks from their latest album ‘Dear Science’ I realised the error of my ways.
Just in time too, as I spotted Kyp Malone recording for Jools Holland’s show. That bushy but neat beard, those round tortoiseshell glasses, that guitar strap and the gold print tee… Finally! A man who knows how to wear a waistcoat, a great example to us all. Shame Boyzone aren’t TV on the Radio fans.

Just last week, Brandish editor Isabelle asked the general fashion public if the waistcoat could ever be worn well. We were subjected to the torture of Boyzone (whose waistcoat crimes can also be seen here,) and then buttered up with stories of white waffle and petrol blue. Now, I’ve created an outfit out of an All Saints waistcoat and looked to Frank Sinatra for tailoring inspiration.

In theory I should really like waistcoats, they are great for adding definition to a silhouette and are a classic item of tailoring. I own a couple of beautiful waistcoats, a white waffle Moss bros one and a petrol blue wool waistcoat but can’t bring myself to wear any of them because of photographs like the one above. Boyzone were pictured at the weekend providing the entertainment for the switching on of the Blackpool lights, hosted by the Top Gear team.
Do any of you manage to pull off the waistcoat without looking like one of Ireland’s finest? Email me at isabelle [at] shinymedia.com.

David Beckham was pictured this week at the Teen Choice Awards in a waistcoat and check shirt combo. Teamed with a pair of jeans it’s a good way to add some smarts to a relaxed outfit.
High School Musical’s Zac Efron took a similar tack and wore his white polo with a tailored grey waistcoat for a classic, fresh look. To emulate Efron and Beckham’s look pick up a waistcoat from Topman or Burton; you can also get do a good selection of secondhand waistcoats from Rokit. Waistcoats can sometimes look a little newsboy or even worse, Boyzone circa 1996 so try to steer clear of anything too retro, like wide-leg pants with turn-ups or baker boy caps.
