Chelsea update: Yaya Toure and Radamel Falcao updates

By Stefano on March 21st, 2013

Well after yesterday’s revelation that Yaya Toure could be about to quit Mnan City the papers today are hinting that Chelsea could be favourites, alongside Real Madrid, to land the 29 year old.

ESPN suggests that Chelsea see Toure as the perfect replacement for England international Frank Lampard, who may or many no be with the club after the summer.

Chelsea are one of only a handful of clubs in the world who could afford to match Toure’s current wages which rank at £220,000 a week.

There doesn’t appear to be too much weight to this story, but it is one to keep an eye on.

Meanwhile the Express suggests that Chelsea are a step nearer signing Atletico Madrid’s sensational striker Radamel Falcao after the club had a secret meeting with the player at the weekend.

According to The Express Spanish TV station Punto Pelota claims a secret meeting between Atletico Madrid and Chelsea took place on Sunday to discuss a proposed move for Falcao. There are however a few sticking points namely that as part of any deal with Chelsea, the club want to keep Chelsea’s on loan goalkeeper Thiabut Courtois another year.

Falcao would be a hugely impressive addition to the Chelsea squad. Were Toure to sign too surely Chelsea would start the season being perceived as potential Premiership winners.

Yaya Toure tells City to sort his contract out – or he will be off

By Stefano on March 20th, 2013

The Sun has a huge football exclusive this morning which concerns the fate of Man City’s massively talented midfielder Yaya Toure.

Apparently the player has been in contract talks with City for six months now and according to the paper if he doesn’t sign a new deal by the weekend the 29 year old will look for a move.

And depressingly for City fans Toure’s agent has said that the deal isn’t about money.

Dimitri Seluk said

“I do not feel he will stay at City. This is not about money. He wants to leave because of many reasons.

“He is one of the best players at Manchester City but does not feel the respect of the staff. Only Roberto Mancini respects Yaya.”

It could be that City simply have decided that they can’t afford to keep their star player. He is currently on £220,000 a week which makes him the club’s top earner and is one reason why City’s wages bill is astronomical.

The tricky part for City though would be finding a a club willing to pay his gargantuan wages, especially as Toure heads towards the end of this career.

The most obvious destinations would be PSG or a Russian club like Anzhi Makhachkala who are ambitious and could afford to pay him. Though Barca, Chelsea or even Man United might be tempted to stretch their wage bill further to land one of the most talented players on the planet.

To be honest though this feels like agent posturing. My money would be on the player singing a new contract at the club very soon as he angles for a better deal. What do you think?

The Premiership’s 15 best African players of all time – Drogba, Radebe, Mido (!?) and more

By Stefano on January 16th, 2013

So here we go again. The African Cup Of Nations kicks off this week to the delight of football fans everywhere and the chagrin of a small group of managers who lose key players for a few weeks.

Later this week we’ll asses which clubs are going to suffer the most during the month, but for now it is time to look back and salute some of the great Africans who played in the Premiership.

I have chosen 15 players who in one way or another all made their presence felt in the English league. Some, like Mido, only really shone for one season, others, like Lucas Radebe and Lauren had a huge impact over an extended period of time.

Anyhow here then are the 15. Tell us in the comments who we missed. And roll on South Africa v Cape Verde Islands.

Yeboah had been top Bundesliga scorer twice with Eintracht Frankfurt, in 1993 and 1994, when Leeds came knocking. The club signed the Ghanian on loan in 2005 and so began a short, but incendiary Premiership career. In his first season he managed to score 12 times in just 18 appearances. His goal getting prowess and in particular his ability to score memorable goals lead to him win Leeds' player of the season in 1996 - the first non-Briton to win the award. As for his best goal, well take your pick. Strikes against Liverpool and Wimbledon are arguably two of the best goals ever scored in the Premiership's ten year history. There were tears when he signed for German club Hamburg in 1997. Although long gone he is still revered in Yorkshire and was arguably the first world class African player to play in England.

The ten most popular Premiership players – the ones you admire and respect

By Stefano on January 3rd, 2013

If you were to do a poll to find out who is the most popular player in the Premiership Robin Van Persie would probably win at canter given the billions of United fans across the globe who would vote for him.

But is he really the most popular player in the Premiership? Thought not. So I asked a highly cultured group of footy fans to name who their favourite Premiership players are, the catch being  that they couldn’t nominate anyone from their own team – and naming a player from their rivals was positively encouraged.

So which players do you admire? Who do you like watching? Who do you respect? And who would you think would be top value if you went for a drink with them?

Here are the ten players we came up with. Tell us who we missed in the comments.

Ok, so I know some fans don't like him because he can be a bit un-necessary when tackling, but you have to admire the United midfielder for his talent, loyalty to the Reds and down to earth approach to life. How many other Premiership players would take the bus? The only other United players to get nods were Rooney and Michael Carrick. If Carrick could repeat his United form for England this year he'd probably get a few more.
